SIX Northside men who united in grief following the death of their much-loved pal, are honouring his memory by raising cash for charity. The idea for the Brendan Keating Memorial Fund came about just hours after the group laid to rest their brother and friend who died suddenly of a massive heart attack aged just 35 years. Brendan was a fit and healthy man who had enjoyed football and golf until his death five years ago. He died while buying a match programme in Celtic Park, one hour before kick-off. “There was never a history of heart complaints in our family,” his brother Michael Keating told Northside People. “He wasn’t well about two weeks before he died but got the all clear from the doctors. The blockage in his heart valves would never have shown up unless he had got the full third degree examination by the doctors. “It was a real shock, there was just a year between myself and Brendan so we did everything together when we were growing up. “Both of us played football with the rest of the guys so we thought of ways in which we can all do something to prevent needless deaths. “It’s nice to know that we are keeping Brendan’s name alive in some way too.” The Brendan Keating Memorial Fund is run by Michael Keating, Eamonn Balfe, Tony Seery, David Doolan, Dennis Moore and Shay Maguire. A community in Kenya now has a children’s school and a hospital has running water thanks to the dedication and fundraising efforts of the six friends. Closer to home, much of the money raised through the fund has gone towards heart research and kitting out Garda cars in Dublin 15 and Kilkenny with life-saving defibrillators. “Over the past five years we have picked causes which we think Brendan would have liked to support,” Eamonn Balfe explained. “In the first and second years we chose Gorta and the heart research team at Connolly Hospital which played a vital role in fitting out the Garda cars with the defibrillators. “We’ve also donated money towards the Make a Wish Foundation, the Niall Mellon Trust and a school for children with Downs Syndrome in Palmerstown.” The Memorial Fund has also donated thousands of euro to the LauraLynn Hospice Foundation. A benefit night will be held on September 27, in Westmanstown Sports Club when a cheque will be presented to the LauraLynn Foundation. The account number for the Brendan Keating Memorial Fund is the Bank of Ireland, Finglas, account number 91594907, sort code 90-05-51.
