Fine Gael has rejected a claim by the Green Party that their attempt to force Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to prepare a new environmental report for the upgrade of a waste water treatment plant, which would have delayed the project, was politically motivated. At a recent Council meeting Fine Gael councillors John Bailey, Maria Bailey and Louise Cosgrave tabled an emergency motion to halt the construction of a sewage treatment plant at Shanganagh that would significantly improve the water quality in Killiney Bay. Local Green Party councillor Tom Kivlehan described the motion as “a cynical attempt to play politics and divide a community for electoral purposes”. “We all saw last year in Galway what can happen when you have inadequate sewerage systems in place which is why we need plants like these to ensure our water quality is improved and our rivers, beaches and environment are protected,” he said. However, Cllr Maria Bailey said her party only wanted the development to be carried out properly. “We never wanted to stop the plant,” she insisted. “We tabled the motion to get a new EIS because the original one was done in 2001 and we feel that it is outdated and didn’t take into account the effect that the Bray sewage treatment would have on it. “It was never about opposing a treatment plant,” she added. “We wanted the thing done properly from the start. We do not want an ad hoc development. The Greens are factually incorrect and they are also very out of touch with the people in Shankill.” |
