A YOUNG Dubliner left a trail of competitors from Europe, African and the Middle East in his wake recently when he came fifth in an international sports event.David O'Caoimh (14) from Killiney, was competing in the EAME (Europe Africa & Middle East) Wakeboarding Championships. Against difficult odds, David travelled as part of a seven rider team to Tremolat in France to compete against 16 other countries. While David has to practice in our cold Irish weather, many of his competitors are given opportunities to train year round in much warmer climates. Wakeboarding is the fastest growing water sport in the world and there are an estimated 30 million active water-ski and wakeboard participants globally. The sport derives from a combination of waterskiing, snowboarding and surfing whereby the wakeboarder is towed behind a specially designed speedboat at speeds of around 20-25 miles per hour. David did extremely well to come fifth in the Under 14 category and overall the Irish team delivered a very impressive performance and secured the Team Silver Medal. David can be seen training regularly at Shercock (Lough Sillan) and he is also a member of Lough Muckno Water-ski and Wakeboard Club in Castleblayney. |
