dub.jpgIT NEARLY didn’t happen this year, but a late call went out and players from across Dublin assembled in Bray for the 9th Kick Fada competition last week.
The rules are simple, there are lines on the pitch every five metres starting at 30 metres. The goal is double width and each player takes three shots over the bar.
Players who put one over stay in for the next round which is five meters further out and the game continues moving five meters every round.
It was to be a nail biting finish as both Cliodhna O’Connor (Dublin) and Mary Sheridan (Meath) went through after the 40 metre round.
The umpire decided to increase to 42 metres and both girls came through. Another metre was added and again both put the ball over the bar.
When the range was set at 45 metres though, neither player could find the target and it was sudden death then back at the 40 metre mark.
Disaster struck the Dubs girl at the 42 metres mark which although her shot had the height and distance it sailed slightly to the left of the upright heading in the direction of Wicklow!
It was not to be and Meath took the honours.
Cliodhna and fellow Mearnógian teammate Emma Dunne took home the Silver and Bronze.
Well done Cliodhna, Emma and the Dublin girls who turned out to make this year’s event a record attendance in the Ladies competition.
Dublin Ladies interests were represented in the men’s competition too when Gerry McGill stepped up to the mark.
But there was a tricky breeze blowing as Mícheal O’Muircheartaigh kept pointing out.
It was one of those gusts which had already caught Cliodhna that put Gerry out of the competition on the 55 metre line.
Dublin collected the Bronze in the Men’s competition with a fine performance by Kilmacud’s Mark Vaughan.
