ringsend.jpgATHLETICS Ireland and McDonald’s announced a major new partnership at Ringsend earlier this month which aims to transform grassroots athletics across Ireland.
Special guests at the launch in Irishtown Stadium included Minister for Sports, Martin Cullen and Sonia O’Sullivan, Ambassador for the new ‘McDonald’s Little Athletics’ programme.
Commenting on the initiative, Minister Martin Cullen TD said: “The McDonald’s Little Athletics programme is an exciting project for the development of sport in Ireland.
“The programme focuses on introducing the fundamentals of athletic movement to children in a fun, exciting and non-competitive environment.
“It provides an innovative way of allowing children to get involved in sport from an early age and I commend McDonald’s Ireland and Athletics Ireland for investing in this programme and providing this opportunity."
The McDonald’s Little Athletics programme will be rolled out to athletics clubs across Ireland from September 2008.
Athletics Ireland developed the initiative to enhance the agility, co-ordination and balance of 5 - 10 year olds, the age group identified as the fundamental stage in longer term physical development of children.
CEO of Athletics Ireland, Mary Coghlan, said her organisation was optimistic about the new partnership.
“The sponsorship of the Little Athletics programme by McDonald’s is a strong fit for Athletics Ireland as we both have a passion for getting children involved in a healthy lifestyle from a young age,” she said.
“The programme helps this by making athletics fun for kids and now with McDonald’s we can work to increase participation across the country.”
The McDonald’s Little Athletics programme will be delivered in Dublin by Athletics Ireland’s regional development officers and by athletics leaders - adults trained by Athletics Ireland through the Athletic Leader coaching qualification.
The development officers will work with the leaders within the clubs to deliver the programme during autumn and spring.
