A famous Southside hairdresser who cut and styled the locks of some of Ireland’s most famous entertainers has decided to cut back on his business and retire.Hairstyling by Jon on the Glenageary Road in Dún Laoghaire shut up shop just before Christmas. Having served Dún Laoghaire for over 30 years, it was an emotional occasion for all concerned, especially for owner Jon Day who established the salon in 1974. Jon rapidly gained a reputation for being one of Dublin's most talented stylists in the 1960s and he regularly visited Paris and other European capitals to experience at first hand the latest techniques and styles from the continent’s leading stylists, including Vidal Sassoon. Jon's knowledge and experience of emerging international styles and techniques made him the stylist of choice for many of the leading names in Ireland's showband circuit, including Butch Moore and the Capital Showband, Dickie Rock, Red Hurley and the Miami Showband. While based in Dún Laoghaire Jon said he also cut the hair of such luminaries as sculptor Imogen Stuart and actor Emmet Bergin of Glenroe fame. Speaking to Southside People, Jon said: “I was very lucky that when I came back from Paris a lot of the stars from Irish showbands were living in the Drumcondra area and I used to style their hair. “Not only were they customers but some of them were friends as well and I am still in contact with some of them.” Situated directly across the road from the Victorian Peoples’ Park, Hairstyling by Jon is well known and regarded by many Dún Laoghaire residents. Jon took the decision to close the salon's doors with mixed feelings - a combination of regret and anticipation. He added: “I decided to retire because running the salon myself was getting a bit much. It was a big salon and it was too big to run on my own. So I decided to slow down a bit. Now I go to people’s houses to do it privately. “I am still trying to get used to retirement,” he admitted. “One thing I do miss is my routine because when I had the salon I was up at 7.30 in the morning and I had my customers to work on for the rest of the day.” However, this difficult decision offers Jon the freedom to enjoy personal interests including his seven month old granddaughter, Lydia and exciting new opportunities in retirement. In parting, Jon said he would like to extend sincere gratitude to all his customers, staff, and friends who contributed to his success over the years, in particular Adele Fennel (senior stylist) and Andrea Day (daughter-in-law) who both worked closely with Jon for a number of years. |
