ALTHOUGH Westport may have taken all the plaudits nationally at this year’s Tidy Towns competition, there were a number of successes for North Dublin towns and villages to celebrate in various categories.
Skerries were victorious in the Dublin Regional award after scoring 291 points, holding off Malahide who finished with 284.
Skerries also won the Fingal County Award and an individual gold medal.
Malahide also took second in the county award and won a gold medal for its excellent team of volunteers.
The town of Balscadden won an Endeavour Award for its continued improvement while St Patrick’s Boys’ National School in Donabate won the Dublin School Award.
Howth, with 259 points, was highly commended in the Fingal County Award, with neighbouring Raheny achieving the same feat in the Dublin City Council area.
Dublin North TD Michael Kennedy (FF) congratulated all the volunteers who contributed to the successes.
“The continued success of Skerries and Malahide in these awards illustrates the commitment of the towns to keeping them areas of beauty,” said Deputy Kennedy.
“I want to send my best wishes to the pupils, staff and parents at St Patrick’s Boys’ National School for winning the Dublin School Award.
“They are a testament to the fact that volunteerism can be encouraged at any age.”
“Despite not managing to secure medals, other areas of North Dublin achieved excellent standards. Among them were Lusk and Donabate which achieved third and fourth place respectively in their local category, along with Swords which also ranked top of its category.”
Meanwhile, Dublin North East TD Tommy Broughan (Lab) also offered congratulations to the Tidy Towns participants in his area.
“Raheny, Howth and Sutton all participated in this year’s competition and scored exceptionally high points in their categories,” said Deputy Broughan.
“The effort that goes into competing in the Tidy Towns competition by local residents and businesses is phenomenal.
“The work by the local community in Raheny, Howth and Sutton has made each of these parishes a cleaner, more attractive and pleasant place to live for all residents.”
