Over 400 new jobs are to be created at the Dundrum Town Centre in the midst of the current economic downturn, which has seen thousands made unemployed across the country in recent months. Details of the 444 positions, due to come on stream by November, were unveiled at the centre as part of the ongoing development of the major shopping facility. An Tanaiste and Minister for Trade and Employment, Mary Coughlan TD (FF) attended the announcement which was made by the cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Cllr Tom Joyce (FG). Relocation The new positions will be created with the opening of Pembroke District and Dundrum South – two new retail and leisure areas within the centre. Dundrum South, which saw the arrival of the Road Safety Authority head office and the relocation of an additional 600 employees to Dundrum in June, is located on the Sandyford Road and will further accommodate several well-established retailers to the centre. Director Don Nugent said: “Dundrum Town Centre continues to attract new tenants and Irish retail firsts to the centre, which highlights retailers’ confidence in the Irish retail market. “It is this same assurance that has led to the creation of a further 444 jobs, which will be coming into effect over the coming weeks.” He added: “Dundrum’s success can be attributed to the centre’s exceptional mix of tenants, extensive trading hours, weather proof shopping, inviting environment and easy access by LUAS or road, along with outstanding car parking facilities.” A number of new and existing retailers including House of Fraser, Hamleys, Free Spirit, Harvey Nichols, Marks and Spencer and Tescos took part in a jobs fair at the centre last week. Cllr Joyce said he was delighted to announce the positive news. “For someone who has grown up and still living in Dundrum, this announcement is another sign of the success that the town centre has brought to the area,” he said. “When you consider the site before the development took place, it was difficult to envisage the scale, look and community feel that Dundrum Town Centre would bring to the village.” Tánaiste Mary Coughlan said the retail sector played an important role in the Irish economy with around 200,000 people – almost one in ten of the workforce – employed in shops throughout Ireland. “The last few years have seen rapid sales growth in the retail sector,” she said. “In real terms, the volume of retail sales grew by almost six per cent per year between 2005 and 2007, a rate of growth without parallel in any other economy in the euro area. Growth “While the period ahead will be challenging, this announcement of 444 jobs reflects confidence in the continued growth in this important sector,” she added. Meanwhile, the creation of a further 450 jobs over the next five years as eLearning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) plan to centralise their research and development centre in the greater Dublin area has been welcomed. Deputy Chris Andrews (FF) said it was reassuring that jobs were being created during the current period. "Dublin continues to be a successful hub for business investment and this move demonstrates confidence in the Irish market nationally," Deputy Andrews said. |
