EUROVISION singer and You’re a Star Judge Linda Martin launched a special  arts exhibition at Axis in Ballymun last Friday (September 17).
The singer who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1992 with ‘Why Me’ is a patron of Dogs Aid and the animal charity will benefit from funds raised from pieces sold during the ‘Pup Art’ exhibition.
The exhibition, which runs until September 26, features prints and paintings by established artists including Mary Fitzgerald, Patricia McKenna, Anthony Lyttle, Elke Thonnes and Cecelia Moore.
Linda Martin said she was looking forward to the launch and she appealed for locals to show their support for Dogs Aid which runs a subsidized animal clinic in Ballymun.
“We are supposed to be a nation of animal lovers, but with such a high number of our stray and unwanted dogs destroyed every year,” she said.
“There are a lot of dogs needlessly suffering due to our inability to look after them. I very much welcome and support the work of Dogs Aid in helping us tackle this problem.”
Dogs Aid is staffed by volunteers and entirely funded by public donations, all of which goes to help the animals. The charity is currently in the process of building a new sanctuary on a permanent site staff hope to move their dogs to their new home later this year.
“Our sanctuary aims to give the animals as normal a life as possible until they get re-homed, and we prefer them to spend most of the day playing in the grounds of the sanctuary rather than being cooped up in runs,” said a spokesperson for the organisation.
Dogs Aid was set up in 1987 by three women who wanted to re-home unwanted and abandoned dogs. It has a no destruction policy and becomes a permanent home for many dogs.
Dogs Aid also gives sanctuary to feral cats and other animals in need.
Dogs Aid can be contacted after 12pm on 8347134 or 087-2944310 or via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
