A BALDOYLE man has returned from the European Transplant and Dialysis Games victorious after winning a silver medal in the badminton doubles.Harry Ward spent a week competing in Wurzburg, Germany, against other transplant athletes from across Europe at the start of the month. Competing in bowling, badminton and a five-kilometre walk, Harry put on a great show for the Irish team and proved that transplant patients can live active healthy lifestyles. “I travelled over to Germany with my wife, Mary, for the competition,” he told Northside People. “These are the first games I’ve been to since my operation. “I had a kidney transplant in 2007; it’s a very serious operation and I was very lucky to have a donor. “When I was on dialysis before a donor was found, I competed in the three-kilometre walk in Hungary and won. “It shows that people can have active lives while they are on dialysis and I would encourage more people to get involved and not feel isolated.” A retired postman, Harry (54) is a member of the local badminton club in Baldoyle where he has been playing for a number of years. He now hopes to travel to Australia next year to compete and is looking forward to the games being held in Dublin in 2010. “Now that I’m retired I have a bit more time to travel to these things so I’m looking forward to Australia next year,” he added. “It’s going to be hosted in DCU in 2010, which should be a great opportunity for the Irish Kidney Association to get some publicity.” In total, the Irish team brought home 42 medals, placing us third on the medals table for the games. Meanwhile, the team has called on members of the public to carry donor cards and hope the games highlighted the importance of becoming an organ donor. |
