THE movie ‘32A’ that was mostly shot on location on the Northside of Dublin and has the Grove disco in Raheny as its central theme has opened in cinemas across the capital. With a superb cast that includes Aidan Quinn and Orla Brady, the film was directed by Marian Quinn and is partly autobiographical. The story is set in the ‘in-between’ time of a girl’s life, when she is no longer a girl and not yet a woman. Set in 1979, ‘32A’ is a bittersweet coming of age tale, touching on the truths of adolescence, first love, heartbreak, friendship debacles, peer pressure and family woes. A central theme in the movie is the Grove disco that operated from St Paul’s College in Sybil Hill, Raheny, during the 1980s and into the 90s. The man behind the Grove was DJ Cecil Nolan and he plays a cameo role in the movie. “A gang of ‘old Grovers’ and myself went to see the movie and I have to say the filmmakers have done an absolutely brilliant job,” Cecil told Northside People. “They’ve managed to capture the vibe that existed in the original Grove. The whole Northside of Dublin is depicted in a wonderful way in the movie with great scenes of St Anne’s Park in Raheny. “Although it’s something of a surreal experience when you’re sitting there and all of a sudden you actually pop up on the screen.” Marian Quinn who directed the film comes from an Irish/American family and spent some of her teenage years growing up in Raheny. She is a sister of Hollywood actor, Aidan Quinn, who also stars in ‘32A’, alongside South Dublin actress Ailish McCarthy, Sophie Jo Wasson, Orla Long, Riona Smith, Orla Brady and Jared Harris. Janey Pictures, who developed and financed the film out of their base in Dromahaire, County Leitrim, produced ‘32A’. The movie was edited in Sligo town during 2007 and premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh where it took top honours, including the Best First Feature Award. It also premiered internationally in the Berlinale in Germany, one of the world’s leading film festivals and has since been screened in festivals all over the world. ‘32A’ is now showing at Movies @ Dundrum and Swords, Santry Omniplex and the Screen, Dublin city centre. |
